Author Carole Glickfeld is a CODA, child of deaf adults (Blanche and Robert Lieber in New York City). She says American Sign Language was practically her first language. Her essay, "American Sign Language: Help or Handicap to a Writer," appeared in Croton Review, Issue #11, Spring/Summer 1988.
She was born in Brighton Beach and grew up (as Carole Lieber) in the Inwood section of Manhattan (north of Washington Heights), near Dyckman Street and Fort Tryon Park. As a child, she was fascinated with the Cloisters at the top of the Park.
